Well folks, Best Mattress Buys has been here in Ormond Beach for 5 years now and we have enjoyed serving the community but, it is time for a change.

The Ormond Beach location will be closing it’s doors for the last time on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020 at 6PM.

If you are a past customer, no worries – you can always get a hold of us at the Palm Coast store. We are NOT going out of business, we are simply closing the Ormond Beach location.

We will also be opening very soon at a new location in Bunnell and we will keep you posted on our grand opening there!

Who Hates Mattress Shopping?

Pushy, uninformed sales people in an industry designed to confuse the shopper makes mattress shopping one of life’s less than pleasant experiences.

Having a little insight before hand can help you make better decisions that will benefit you in the long run.

It is very important to test, evaluate and purchase a mattress set that is designed to provide proper support and spinal alignment. Don’t think that you need to buy a very firm mattress set to experience support and spinal alignment. You may buy a mattress that is plush and still receive the best support and spinal alignment.

Proper Spinal Alignment

Remember, Comfort is what you feel when you lay on your bed – support is what you have felt when you awaken.

Select a mattress set that is comfortable. Dad was not right – a firm bed is NOT always best for your back!

Deep R.E.M., (Rapid Eye Movement), sleep cannot be accomplished if you are not comfortable in your bed. You may think that you have slept through the night, but, constant tossing and turning may prevent you from the deep REM sleep needed and desired for a full recharge.

  • Allow one of our Sleep Specialists to begin your selection process on our varying comfort level floor models. Lay on each bed for 10 to 15 minutes, or longer if needed. We will never rush you.  Test the mattresses in the position(s) that you usually are in when you sleep at home. You should never try more than 5 mattresses to minimize selection and purchasing confusion. Narrow your selections to 2 mattress sets. Decide which one of the selected two is the most comfortable within your budget. Sleep DeprivationAlthough countless factors affect the aging process, one of the simplest things people can do to avoid accelerated aging is get enough sleep. Quality sleep allows the body to produce the human growth hormone that helps build muscle mass, thicken skin, strengthen bones and stay youthful.

The cumulative effects of sleep deprivation can be shocking. Constant fatigue creates more stress and irritability daily, both of which can significantly accelerate the aging process. Similarly, lack of sleep creates additional physical stress on the body, putting people at a higher risk for:

– high blood pressure
– diabetes
– obesity

Snooze or Lose

Memory LossSleep aids memory. Whether tested in animals or humans, studies have shown that sense memories–such as learning a certain sequence of dance steps–take root more solidly when paired with adequate rest. Now new research shows that so-called declarative memories–such as a sequence of facts–also benefit from slumber, especially when subjects are challenged with subsequent, competing information.

Jeffrey Ellenbogen of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues recruited 60 healthy subjects–excluding night owls, the restless and the lethargic–and asked them to memorize 20 pairs of random words, such as blanket and village. The participants were assigned to one of five groups of 12 and had unlimited time to learn the pairings. Two of the groups began learning at 9 A.M and returned for testing at 9 P.M. that evening–with no naps allowed–and two of the groups began learning at 9 P.M. and returned for testing at 9 A.M. the following morning after a night’s sleep.

Partial Sleep Deprivation Linked to Obesity

TiredA poor sleep or the lack of sleep can cause any number of health issues. While reading the latest copy of Sleep Review, I found this interesting article linking poor sleep habits to obesity. Everyone knows that you require a proper diet and exercise to maintain a healthy weight BUT…you also need a good night’s sleep!

People often don’t realize just how important sleep is to their health and productivity!

Evidence linking partial sleep deprivation to energy imbalance is relevant to weight gain prevention and weight loss promotion. A new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dieteticsbases this finding on an extensive review of literature published over a 15-year period.

More than 35% of American adults are obese and more than 28% sleep less than 6 hours a night. While weight-loss strategies incorporate lifestyle changes focusing on diet and exercise, modifications in an individual’s daily routine, including sleep behaviors, can help manage weight.

“Various investigations, although diverse, indicate an effect of partial sleep deprivation on body weight management,” says lead investigator Sharon M. Nickols-Richardson, PhD, MD, professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences, Pennsylvania State University, University Park. “The intriguing relationship between partial sleep deprivation and excess adiposity makes partial sleep deprivation a factor of interest in body weight regulation, particularly in weight loss.”

The research team evaluated articles published between 1996 and 2011 to determine the role of partial sleep deprivation on energy balance and weight regulation. As part of its methodology, the team constructed a series of comparative tables detailing individual study populations, study designs, energy intake, energy expenditure, and measurements of the hormones ghrelin, leptin, insulin, glucose, and cortisol. Analysis of these characteristics identified a set of patterns, including reduced insulin sensitivity, increases in ghrelin, and decreases in leptin among partially sleep-deprived individuals. Changes in ghrelin and leptin influenced energy intake among the study populations.

“Changes in these hormones coinciding with an energy-reduced diet paired with changes in response to partial sleep deprivation may be expected to increase ghrelin and decrease leptin concentrations even further to promote hunger,” says Nickols-Richardson.

The paper calls for further research to determine the effects of sleep deprivation on body composition and substrate use and suggests evaluation of an individual’s sleep patterns combined with regular, sufficient sleep may benefit healthy weight management.

Link Between Cancer and Night Work

Working At NightHere’s an interesting article that suggests a link between cancer and night work.

As published in an article posted by Sleep Review, it is suggested that exposure to the artificial light required to work at night may cause reduced production of the sleep hormone melatonin, inducing physiological changes that may provoke the development of cancerous tumors – particularly in men.

Night work can increase cancer risk in men, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology by a research team from Centre INRS–Institut Armand-Frappier and Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. The study is one of the first to provide evidence among men of a possible association between night work and the risk of prostate, colon, lung, bladder, rectal, and pancreatic cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“Exposure to light at night can lead to a reduced production of the sleep hormone melatonin, inducing physiological changes that may provoke the development of tumors. This hormone, habitually released in the middle of the night in response to absence of light, plays a pivotal role in hormonal functions and in the immune system,” explained Professor Marie-Élise Parent of Centre INRS–Institut Armand-Frappier, the study’s lead investigator.

Despite finding that night work increases the risk of a number of cancers, the researchers are intrigued by the absence of a relationship between duration of night work and cancer risk found in the study. In theory, an increasing duration in the period of night work would be expected to be accompanied by an increase in the risk of cancer, but the results obtained did not confirm such a tendency. As well as opening up new research avenues, this finding raises questions about the factors that might influence people’s adaptation to night work. Other more targeted research, including Parent’s current research on prostate cancer, will also allow for a more detailed study of the consequences of night work on health.

For this research, Parent and her team analyzed data from a study on occupational exposure and cancer that was conducted between 1970 and 1985, involving 3,137 men aged 35 to 70 years who had been diagnosed with a cancer at 18 hospitals in the Montreal metropolitan area, compared to a control group of 512 cancer-free individuals from the general population.
